Access to healthcare
Our Approach
We are committed to supporting society through some of its toughest healthcare challenges. We work in collaboration with governments, academia, international and local organisations, and other stakeholders and we always put patients first. Our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries, was one example of our equitable access strategy in action.
We provide healthcare solutions across the patient care pathway - from prevention, raising awareness, diagnosis and treatment, to post-treatment support.

Our Impactful Initiatives
This program, in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and Plan International, focuses on improving health outcomes for vulnerable youth. Targeting those aged 10-24 from underprivileged communities, it focuses on preventing prevalent non-communicable diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart and respiratory diseases, and mental health issues.
For over a decade, the program has operated in communities in Delhi and Karnataka. With peer educators as community influencers, it raises awareness about the harmful effects of behaviours like tobacco and alcohol use, smoking, and unhealthy lifestyles.
Through these impactful initiatives, we've gained backing from local governments in Karnataka and Delhi, including key entities like MoHFW, NCD Cell, and the National Health Mission. This support extends beyond program implementation to strategically enhance our grassroots connections by involving community government health offices for effective community engagement.
Through our program, we've provided valuable knowledge to more than 500,000 people, empowering them for a healthier tomorrow.

Girls Belong Here
At AstraZeneca, we're dedicated to raising awareness on accessing equitable healthcare for girls and women, globally. As a science-led company, we are passionate about inspiring and advancing the next generation of women and girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Recognizing gender's impact on health access, we strive to improve health equity.
International Day of the Girl Child, observed for over a decade on October 11th, celebrates girls' strengths, amplifies their voices, and unleashes their power as global citizens.
Partnering with Plan International, we support #GirlsBelongHere - an annual campaign empowering girls to take leadership roles and break barriers of discrimination and prejudices that continue to hold girls back.

Ganga Godavari Screening Programme
We strongly advocate for early detection and precise treatment to prevent the adverse effects of NCDs. Our flagship initiative, the Ganga Godavari Screening Program, prioritises cancer detection in underserved communities, particularly women aged 30-60. Since the launch of this program in 2019, it has expanded to multiple regions and established collaborations with the Indian Cancer Society (ICS) and CAPED India to amplify its impact.
This program focuses on facilitating early cancer screening and awareness for women, especially in underserved areas where healthcare facilities are limited. It features specialised screening camps for oral, breast, and cervical cancer, alongside community health education activities. With robust follow-up processes, we ensure timely referrals for treatment at cancer hospitals.
So far, it has positively impacted over 8,500 patients in Tikri, Mathura, Nashik, and Patna.

Community Empowerment

A 'Make-A-Wish Foundation' Collaboration
AstraZeneca, partnering with Make-A-Wish Foundation, took the promise to fulfil the wishes of 550 critically ill children across the country. This initiative was aimed at enhancing treatment adherence and advancing the commitment to care.
Healthcare professionals have observed that fulfilling patients' wishes serves as a valuable complement to medical care, as it improves their well-being and increases adherence to treatment protocols.
We have supported a series of 11 programs held across various cities in India, including Bengaluru, New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Vellore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad, to connect with as many children, between the ages of 3 to 18, and to create joyous memories.

'Back to School' Campaign
According to UNESCO, around 37% of girls are uncertain about returning to school after the pandemic due to increased household responsibilities, leading to a rise in dropout rates, worsened by the gender gap.
Our 'Back to School' campaign was initiated in response to this pressing issue, addressing the trend of children being kept out of school post-lockdown. We conducted enrolment drives with parents to promote ongoing formal education and distributed Education Kits to meet identified needs.

'Vaccine Hesitancy Program'
Following the start of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in India, vaccine hesitancy emerged as a significant challenge. Reports from various regions highlighted public reluctance due to myths, fear of side effects, and misconceptions. Swift and decisive community intervention was imperative to encourage greater participation in vaccination, aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.
‘Recognizing this need, AstraZeneca collaborated with Plan India to launch the 'Vaccine Hesitancy Program' with two-fold objectives: supporting government efforts to combat COVID-19 by tackling vaccine hesitancy and promoting COVID-Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) through community-led initiatives.
